Background: Early detection of melanoma increases the chances of favorable prognosis. In the past thirty years various auxiliary tools have been implemented to enhance the detection of skin neoplasms. The most widely used are total body photography and sequential digital dermoscopy. Since 2017 a novel imagining technique allowing a 3D reconstruction of almost the complete skin surface has been commercially available. Aim: The aim of this work was to describe the synergies between 3D total body photography and digital dermoscopy in monitoring of skin lesions based on selected examples, personal experience and literature. Method: Image data was obtained from the participants of the Changing Naevi, HOPs and Mind your Moles studies. The cohort included adult residents of Queensland, Australia, with multiple naevi and/or history of cutaneous melanoma(s) as well as subjects recruited from the general population. The imagining was performed using Vectra ® WB360 System (Canfield Scientific Inc, Parsippany, NJ, USA) for total body captures and VEOS ®SLR, LED-flash-based solution for dermoscopy. Result: 3D Total body photography allows identification of new lesions or major morphologic changes that warrant dermoscopic evaluation and offers a context for its adequate interpretation. Conclusion: Both modalities complement each other and lead to a higher diagnostic confidence.
