Abstract

BACKGROUND: Patients with Non-CF/Non-PCD-bronchiectasis represent a heterogeneous group including immunodeficient patients and chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) colonization and may impact the clinical outcome. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: In this study we investigated, whether immunocompromising disease or immunosuppressive therapy represents a risk factor for PA colonization. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 119 Non-CF/Non-PCD-bronchiectasis patients from a specialized pulmonary outpatient clinic. RESULTS: Most frequent underlying etiologies were postinfectious bronchiectasis (17.6%), connective tissue diseases (16.8%), idiopathic bronchiectasis, bronchiectasis based on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (both 14.3%), Asthma including allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) (13.4%), hematological diseases (5.9%), and primary Ig-deficiency (5.0%). In total, 38 patients were regarded as immunodeficient (32.5%). Sputum cultures were positive for PA in 31.0%, for Hemophilus influenzae in 21.1%, for Staphylococcus aureus in 19.7%, for Klebsiella species in 14.1% and other bacteria with less than 10% per species.Of those with available sputum culture (n=69) we found positive Pseudomonas aeruginosa sputum cultures in 10 of 21 immunodeficient patients (47.6%) compared to 12 of 48 immunocompetent patients (25.0%, p=0.064). CONCLUSION: Our results show a clear trend but still do not prove a significant correlation between immunodeficiency and Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization in Non-CF/Non-PCD-bronchiectasis. Nevertheless, major data size may show significant results.
