Infections caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (cMRSA) have emerged worldwide. In the present study a total of 83 non-duplicated MRSA isolates, collected in 2005 at the routine bacteriological laboratory, Institute of Hygiene, Medical University Graz, were investigated for the presence of the PVL-gene by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Subsequent a fragment analysis was performed using Smal macrorestriction analysis in the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Among the 83 MRSA isolates 52 (62.6 %) MRSA isolates were from hospitalized patients or patients from clinical ambulatories, 31 (37.4%) MRSA isolates originated from patients treated by local practitioners. Seventeen of the 83 MRSA isolates yielded a positive reaction for the PVL-gene, representing a prevalence rate of cMRSA of 20.5 % among the investigated MRSA. Smal macrorestriction patterns showed a clonal relatedness of cMRSA affecting member of the same family, nosocomial outbreaks of hMRSA could not be detected in any MRSA case in 2005.
