Continuous postoperative oxygen therapy to reduce cardiovascular complications in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery - Pilotstudy of AIOLOS trial

Abstract

Introduction: Hypoxaemia is a common condition in patients during the first 48 hours after non-cardiac surgery. In previous studies, it was shown that 37% of patients (> 45 years old) had prolonged hypoxaemic episodes postoperatively. At the same time, nurses failed to detect these hypoxaemic episodes in over 90% resulting in an undersupply of oxygen to patients. However, it must also be noted that not only hypoxaemia itself, but also the hyperoxaemia or oxygen-induced hypercapnia, which can be caused by continuous oxygen administration, may carry risks. One of the aims of the AIOLOS trial is therefore to investigate the impact of continuous oxygen administration on the incidence of cardiovascular complications as well as the differences in the time weighted average of peripheral oxygen saturation below 90% (SpO2-TWA
